North Carolina Zoo joins SEZARC
SEZARC is happy to welcome our newest member to the consortium, the North Carolina Zoo, Asheboro, NC.
The North Carolina Zoo, who will be joining in May, has an extensive animal collection including many hoofstock and pachyderm species. Their interest in white rhinos and African elephants fits well with ongoing studies.
Planned for 2012:
Following on from last year's visit to Ethiopia for capacity training of veterinarians, SEZARC is hosting two veterinarians as part of a collaborative effort between SEZARC, IBREAM, WildCRu and the Ethiopian government to preserve the Ethiopian wolf. Our Ethiopian guests will spend two weeks in July learning techniques for genome resource banking of canids.
Current SEZARC strategies include:
- Working towards semen importation from various species (eg: antelope, elephant, cheetah) for artificial insemination to avoid removing animals from the wild.
- Solving breeding problems of individual animals in zoos and wildlife institutions so that populations remain genetically healthy.
- Providing advice and support for reproductive challenges including mate incompatibility.
- Providing advice and recommendations for the safest and most effective contraceptives to address species overabundance or individual treatment.
Current SEZARC members include:
Disney's Environmental Initiatives and Animal Programs (FL), Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens (FL), Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park (FL), Micanopy Zoological Preserve (FL), White Oak Conservation Center (FL), Birmingham Zoo (AL), and Turner Enterprises, Inc., (MN).
